ABOUT

We all turn on our flat screen TVs or go to the movies, popcorn in hand, to be entertained. You could say that I fit into this multitude to some degree. I knew most of the Disney films as a child, I went to at least of handful of films each summer, and I could probably name a few of the classics like Casablanca, but that was about it.

My transformation was rather gradual but as I remember, it began on a family road trip to Iowa. Along the way we stopped off across America at such landmarks as Devil’s Monument, Mount Rushmore, The Bridges of Madison County, and even the childhood home of John Wayne. And as would be expected we spent the night in many of a hotel and soon enough I discovered a channel called Turner Classic Movies. I caught glimpses of classics such as 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Needless to say it was a great trip but I returned home eager to find out more. I did not have TCM on my TV but I did have the computer and the local library. Soon I was seeing aliens landing on Devil’s Tower in Close Encounters and then watching Cary Grant hang from Mount Rushmore in North By Northwest.

This was the initial spark I needed and then quite by chance one afternoon I stumbled upon the American Film Institute list of 100 Greatest Films. After a quick count, a very quick count, I calculated I could check off a whopping 12 films from the list. I knew I could do better, a lot better. Thus, in the summer of 2010 my film odyssey finally began with the help of this list to guide my novice mind.

From then on I have branched out,  viewing a lot of the classics including Hitchcock and Film-Noir along with Foreign and Contemporary films. My main focuses are popular and highly acclaimed four star films and above. I hope you like my blog and just maybe it will fan your film watching flame.

Thanks for visiting Four Star Film Fan!
